Fast Stream Training

Innovative, challenging training for graduate entrants

At Westminster Explained we understand the increasing demand for focused training to develop the skills of high calibre graduate entrants, to help them meet the demands of their job roles as soon as they enter the civil service. To this end, we have been working with a number of departments to develop innovative, compact yet challenging induction programmes which develop the key skills that any fast streamer needs to do their job effectively.

Working with Grade Managers and fast streamers, we have established four key areas in which training can enhance a fast streamer’s work:

Westminster, Whitehall and Wider Government

All fast streamers need to be aware of and understand the context of their work. Training on this subject looks how the government machine works and the fast streamer’s role within it, using current examples and interactive sessions to make training relevant to everyday work.

Communications

Communicating with ministers, colleagues and stakeholders will be a major aspect of any fast streamer’s job. Helping fast streamers to develop the skills needed for business writing, this training can focus on any area of public sector communications, from ministerial submissions and briefings, to Parliamentary Questions, through to speech writing and correspondence.

Policy

Fast streamers are at the forefront of policy making from the start. An in-depth understanding of the process, from start to finish, and its application in their everyday work is essential. We will use relevant case studies and interactive sessions to develop delegates’ understanding of the process and their practical ability to develop policy.

Professional Skills for Government Core Skills

The Fast Stream is recognized as a gateway to the Senior Civil Service. PSG outlines the core skills that are required to progress into and excel in the SCS. Our training will introduce delegates to the concepts and develop their skills in areas such as government finance, stakeholder working, project management and leadership.
